Family law & mediation · Kanata

Separation is hard enough. The legal side should be clear.

I'm Loreen Irvine. Before I practised law, I served in the Canadian Forces and then worked as a police officer in Edinburgh. I bring that same steadiness, and plain talk about fees, to separation, divorce and family matters.

Calls are taken Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Calls outside those times go to voicemail and are usually answered within 24 hours.

An unusual road to family law

  1. Canadian Forces

Eight years of service, including two years abroad with NATO.

  2. Police officer, Edinburgh

Twelve years with the police in Scotland.

  3. Law degree, Edinburgh Napier University

An LL.B. with Distinction and the Class Medal, including one year at the University of Ottawa.

  4. Back to Canada

A Certificate of Canadian Equivalency from the Canadian Accreditation Committee, then articles with Nelligan O'Brien Payne and a call to the bar.

  5. Family law practice

Several years as an associate with Howard, Ryan, Kelford, Knott & Dixon in Smiths Falls and Carleton Place, before opening Irvine Law.

Fees

How billing works, in plain terms

Legal bills are a worry on top of everything else. Here is how Irvine Law handles them, so there are no surprises.

“Keeping lines of communication open is essential to my business relationship with my clients, so I will often answer brief questions and respond to emails and the occasional text message without additional charges.”

  1. Hourly rateIn most cases, fees are based on an hourly rate. The total depends on the work your matter needs, including whether it goes through the court.
  2. A retainer, held in trustWhen you retain Loreen, you deposit a retainer. It is held in a trust account and billed against monthly.
  3. Topped up each monthYou pay back the amount billed so the retainer stays at its starting balance. That lets you budget and avoids large bills months down the road.
  4. Open lines of communicationBrief questions and emails are often answered at no extra charge.
